Course Description:
An excellent introduction to Play therapy for children with Autism for several volunteers and parents. An experiential introduction to autism and processing issues, including the development and benefits of play and then interventions such as Floor time, interactive play, intensive interaction, sensory and attachment based play, and developing role and rule based games. An excellent introduction to play therapy, suitable for Teachers, Special Needs Assistants, Parents and Carers. This six-week course will start with an overview of the developmental model of Autism, including a look at sensory processing issues. This is an experiential course, where participants will engage in practical learning exercises. We will look at sensory play, pretend and role play. We will explore models such as intensive interaction, Floortime, Theraplay and other ways to engage and connect with your child. We will touch briefly on supporting children in small groups and facilitating play dates. This course is suitable for parents, teachers, SNA’s, grandparents and any other people involved in the life of an autistic child.

Course Content:
Siobhan Dempsey has qualifications in Play therapy, Floortime, Theraplay, NDP and trauma-based play interventions. She specialised in studying Autism and play during her training. She has been developing her play-based interventions, providing early intervention and training parents and professionals within the autistic community for the last seven years. This course is suitable for parents, teachers, SNA’s, grandparents and any other people involved in the life of an autistic child. Participants can practice the skills they learn at home and feedback to the group. The College reserves the right to change the night or cancel classes if numbers are insufficient.
