In class practical work and weekly challenges will allow for students to practice their learning and be given feedback.

Week 1. The Camera - We will learn about how to control light entering the camera using Aperture, Shutter and ISO. In this class we will also explain exposure, how to use your light meter, different metering modes and the histogram.

Week 2. Composition - In this class we will look at the rules of Composition - The rule of thirds, Leading lines, The golden ratio, Positive & negative space, repeated patterns, We will see how these tools can help us create strong frames in which to tell our story.

Week 3. Landscape - On the face of it Landscape photography seems like a very straight forward practice, Jump in your car and go to the local beauty spot and shoot a few pictures, However once you have tried this a few times you will soon realize there is a lot more to it than that. In this class we will look at the tips and tricks for landscape photographers

Week 4. Black & White & Photo assignments - photography was born in monochrome and yet 2 almost a hundred and eighty years later black & white photography is still very popular. Let’s look at the magic of monochrome. Students will have the opportunity to choose one of four assignments due on the last class - This allows students to focus on a body of work on a set theme.

Week 5. Lighting - Natural and artificial light - In this class we will look at manipulating natural light with reflectors, diffusion and negative fill. We will also look at artificial light sources like flash / led their advantages and disadvantages.

Week 6. Photoshop or the Manipulative impulse - In this class we look at the need to manipulate images - The reasons why we alter images and the potential consequences of misrepresenting the world around us. We will also look at Photoshop and its tools from the very basic levels and saturation to removing objects with the clone stamp.

Week 7. Lens choice and the photographic process - The lens we choose will decide how we represent the world around us - 50mm has the same field of view as the human eye. A wide angle lens can draw us into the image but can distort subjects. Telephoto lens can isolate subjects. We will discuss lens choice the do’s and don’t's. We will also look at the process of photography by looking at the contact sheets of some of the world's greatest photographers and see how they came to make their greatest images.

Week 8. Printing your images - In this class we will look at printing your images from the technical aspects of resolution to the file format choices we make along the way. We will also look at screen calibration and getting the best from your home printer.

Week 9. Street photography, The decisive moment and Henri Cartier-Bresson. This class is about the magic of the candid moment - Street photography is about capturing the depth and breadth of the human condition - We will look at the masters of street photography and discuss the technical challenges of working at a fast pace in an ever changing environment.

Week 10. Moving forward, Photography and Art - In this final class we will look at camera clubs, online photo sharing, working to an exhibit or going pro. We will also talk about whether photography can really be considered ART in the same breath as Rembrandt or Caravaggio. We will look at Stieglitz & Szarkowsk and how they changed how we look at photography.

Students should have a camera with some basic manual control.
