This apprenticeship is a 4 year programme consisting of 7 phases. 4 on-the-job and 3 off-the-job in a training facility.

Entry Requirements

To become an apprentice in Ireland you must be hired by an employer. Apprenticeship employers are formally approved by SOLAS in advance of employing apprentices. Apprentices get a formal contract of employment as part of their apprenticeship.

Careers / Further progression

With this four-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified sheet metal worker, with a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Sheet Metal Work.

You may then choose to work as a sheet metal worker employed by firms manufacturing ventilation equipment; catering and food processing equipment; computer and data communications hardware; and vehicles.

Many apprentices use their qualification as a platform to launch careers such as engineers, managers, owners of businesses and instructors amongst others.

Bolton Street (Linenhall)

Apprentices complete two of their three phases of off-the-job training in a higher education institution. A student contribution must be paid for this part of the training.

The amount of the student contribution is a proportion of the annual student contribution paid by students who are attending a full-time course in higher education. The student contribution is paid directly to the higher education institution.

The student contribution for this apprenticeship is €1,000 for Phase 4 and €1,000 for Phase 6.

What does a Sheet Metalworker do?
As a sheet metalworker, your job will involve working with thin metal sheets which you will bend, cut and shape using hammers, small presses, roller machines and guillotines.

You will work with various types of metal including sheet steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel, aluminium and copper. Your work will include the cutting of these metals by using patterns or templates as guides and shaping the metal by forming, bending, beating or rolling. Some sheet metal workers specialise in more complex techniques or in operating one or more of the machines.

By the end of your training, you will be able to:
• Work with a variety of specialised hand and power tools to cut and shape metal and to drill or punch holes
• Understand a range of piping systems
• Understand the scientific uses and properties of metals
• Use mathematics to solve technical or scientific problems
• Operate CNC (computer numerical control) equipment
• Hammer down excess surface weld meta
• Interpret technical drawings and diagrams.
