This Childcare Course is suitable for you if you are new to your role in childcare as an early years practitioner, or if you wish to gain this valuable qualification and find a job in this sector.

Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.
English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.
IT Skills Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Childcare.
Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

This interesting course covers key concepts and practices required for the care, well-being, safety and health of children aged 0–6 years in ELC settings in Ireland. This course integrates the frameworks, principles and standards of Síolta, Aistear, current child care legislation and regulation, child protection and safeguarding legislation and the Tusla Quality Regulatory Framework.
Throughout this programme, you will discover how to;
Outline the requirements necessary to provide for the health and well-being of children in an ECCE setting as informed by national guidelines to include child protection
Describe the factors that contribute to the overall well-being of children
Outline the various nutritional needs of babies and young children
Identify requirements for the promotion of healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments for children
Describe a range of common childhood illnesses
Devise balanced menus for babies, toddlers and children
Perform appropriate personal care routines for babies and young children including the care of the child when unwell
Implement appropriate policies and procedures to include record keeping as required by legislation and good practice guidelines
Utilize a range of practice skills that support and promote the health and well-being of children
Apply knowledge of child development to support children to form secure and positive relationships with adults and children in the ECCE setting
Reflect on personal practice leading to an understanding of healthy, hygienic and safe environments for children.
The course 5N1765 Child Health and Well-being is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

Skills Demonstration 60%.
Project 40%;
A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.
Skills Demonstration 60%;
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 5N1765 Child Health and Wellbeing. QQI is the awarding body.
