This Health and Social Care Course is suitable for you if you are new to your role in health or social care or if you wish to gain this valuable qualification and find a job in this sector.

To commence this course ideally you will have achieved Junior / Leaving Certificate standard or appropriate QQI Qualification or equivalent. Mature Applicants with relevant life and work experience are welcomed. Where deemed appropriate you may have to complete an English Language Proficiency Test.

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

This course explains the role and responsibilities of a Health Care Assistant (HCA), who the HCA reports to, the Multidisciplinary team (MDT) and all relevant up-to-date employment legislation and entitlements. The course will also introduce reflective practice as a means of thinking about and analysing working methods with the aim of continuous improvement for the sake of both the HCA and the client.

Through this programme you will discover how to;
Discuss the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of a care worker

Examine the role of a care worker within the multidisciplinary healthcare team

Demonstrate the ability to plan and provide enhanced quality care

Apply knowledge gained to plan and meet the needs of the individual client

Explore the need for personal planning and growth

Plan strategies to improve own personal development

Reflect on personal effectiveness as a care worker to include own strengths and weaknesses

Reflect on relationships with clients, relatives and multidisciplinary team members and interpersonal issues that arise in care work.

The course 5N0758 Care Support is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting; Assignment 30% and Learner Record 70%.

Assignment 30%; An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a detailed, easy to follow, brief with specific guidelines given to you by your tutor. It is a form of continuous assessment.

Learner Record 70%; A learner record is a self-reported record by you, in which you are required to describe specific learning experiences, activities, responses, skills acquired. You will compile a personal logbook/journal/diary/daily diary/ record.
