This Childcare Course is suitable for you if you are new to your role in childcare as an early years practitioner, or if you wish to gain this valuable qualification and find a job in this sector.

Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.

The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.

Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, to view content.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

Some courses include video, therefore your computer must be capable of playing video and sound.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Childcare.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

5N1773 Early Childhood Education and Play.

On this engaging course you will learn about the various approaches to curriculum, theories of play and education, and the principles and philosophy of Aistear and Síolta in providing for the holistic development children. You will gain knowledge regarding play within a child lead and emergent curriculum, the important role of the adult, providing a rich ELC environment and selecting play materials and storytelling techniques. In addition you will learn about the importance of both the indoor and outdoor ELC environments and how to extend on children's learning experiences in both.

Through this programme you will discover how to;
Outline the types, stages patterns and purposes of children's play

Describe a range of theories of play in the context of children's education to include Psychoanalytic theories (Freud, Winnicott) and Constructivist theories (Piaget, Vygotsky)

Evaluate the role of the adult in children's play

Explore a child lead approach to meeting the play and educational requirements of children

Describe different approaches to curriculum development and implementation in the ECCE setting

Assess the value of equipment, materials, play spaces, both indoors and outdoor in the ECCE setting

Use a range of reading and storytelling techniques appropriate to different stages of children's development and cultural background

Select relevant play activities and materials appropriate to children's interest and stage of development and cultural background

Implement appropriate curricula which promotes learning and the holistic development of the child

Skills Demonstration 40%.

Assignment 30%;
An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a brief with specific guidelines as to what should be included. An assignment is usually of short duration and may be carried out over a specified period of time.

Skills Demonstration 40%;
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a QQI level 5 certificate 5N1773 Early Childhood Education and Play. QQI is the awarding body.
