Course Content:
This is a ten-week course for those who wish to undertake a practice-based study of creative writing. It provides an opportunity to fully immerse in creative practice and to produce a short collection of work over the course of ten weeks. Students will be encouraged to try out different forms and genres such as fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. Among the topics considered are the creative writing process, cultivating inspiration, drafting and editing and key elements of craft. These topics are approached through a series of creative exercises and self-directed reading and writing. Students will get an opportunity to discuss the work they have undertaken in class as well as work they may have embarked on independently. A short assignment, usually requiring a creative response and based on classwork, is given every week and the material produced will form the contents of each student’s ‘Autumn Leaves’ collection. In the final class, everyone will have an opportunity to read an excerpt of their work in a group launch of their collection.
Gráinne Daly lectures in creative writing in University College Dublin where she also teaches on the Lifelong Learning programme. She is an Irish Research Council Scholar and has received awards for her creative practice from the Arts Council of Ireland and South Dublin County Council. Winner of the UCD Maeve Binchy Travel Award, Gráinne's work has been published widely.
