The Level 5 Certificate in Horsemanship (stud) is one year, and the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Stud Management is one year.

Entry Requirements

There is a separate application process for each programme. Applicants to the level 5 Certificate in Kildalton must be 18 years old or over on 1st January following entry. Applicants to Gurteen College must be 17 years or over on 1st January following entry. Ideally applicant should have completed the senior cycle of second level education.

Applicants must successfully complete Level 5 to apply for Level 6. Applicants who seek to enter Level 6 with an equivalent Level 5 qualification must undergo the Teagasc RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process.

Careers / Further progression

There are a number of career opportunities in supporting or service provider roles. There are good employment opportunities in the industry in Ireland and internationally, including work on stud farms, training yards and other equestrian enterprises. Former students have found employment in the UK, USA, Japan & Australia.

Progression
Students with this Level 5 award may apply to the Teagasc Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Stud Management programme. Progression to a higher education course may be possible through the higher education links scheme. Check www.cao.ie or contact the relevant higher education institute for further information. Graduates of the Advanced Certificate progress into employment in the industry.

Application Process:

Student Maintenance Grant:
Students completing this course are eligible to apply for the Teagasc Student Maintenance Grant Scheme. This equates with the rate of Maintenance Grant set by the Department of Education and Skills based on the number of course contact.

Student Maintenance Grants
The Teagasc Authority approved the introduction of means testing of maintenance grants for students attending Further Level Courses at Teagasc and Private Agricultural Colleges in 2012.

Means testing will apply to Teagasc Level 5 and Level 6 full-time courses for the academic year 2023/2024.

Teagasc student maintenance grants are paid through Teagasc and the grant scheme is managed by Teagasc. The Teagasc grant scheme will be implemented along the lines of the National Student Grant Scheme 2023 but varies in respect of what 'add backs' are used to determine overall reckonable income.

Please note that applicants cannot apply to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) to be means tested for a Teagasc Student Maintenance Grant.

Stud Management Industry
The Irish thoroughbred industry contributes an estimated €2.46 billion to the economy and close to 30,000 direct and indirect jobs. Stud management career opportunities include stud hand, head person, barn manager, foaling manager, sales preparation manager, assistant stud farm manager, bloodstock agent, pinhooker and stallion handler.
