Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to identify a wide range of plants, their characteristics and use in different horticultural situations. A plant portfolio will be completed as part of the assessment.

Duration

25 weeks
Courses run Thursday between the hours of 11.30am to 4.30pm.

Entry Requirements

Students must be age 17 by 1st Jan in year of application.
Horticulture can be a physically demanding career path.
Applicants should have a keen interest in learning and working in horticulture.
Teagasc supports access for students with disabilities.

Careers / Further progression

By taking other Level 5 modules, students may be able to build towards a full award of QQI Certificate in Horticulture.

Students who do not wish to pursue a full-time horticultural programme with Teagasc can opt to complete a single module or a number of modules on a part-time basis where available. Examples of modules available are listed on Teagasc website. Please contact Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture, National Botanic Gardens or Teagasc College of Horticulture, Kildalton College for further information.

Course material will be delivered face to face through a combination of practical instruction and assessment and class based teaching. All practicals will be delivered face to face for instruction and assessment in the National Botanic Gardens and Teasasc Ashtown.

Moodle is the online learning platform that will be used as the resource for supplementary learning content for students. Moodle will also be used for hosting recorded class content for some but not all modules.

Module Content
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Explain the binomial plant nomenclature system
• Explain technical plant terminology
• Identify a range of common plants at different stages
• Select suitable plants for different planting situations
• Plant a range of plants using safe working practices
