Course Description:
An Introduction to Crochet for Beginners and Enthusiasts By Jordyn Lynch Bring Own wool and tools-list being issued to participants. Course Structure The proposed course offers participants a total of 12 hours tuition divided into 2 hour sessions over a 6 week period. It is designed to be suitable for beginners and anybody who is interested in expanding their skills and learning how to develop their own ideas into fully fledged projects.

Goals and Objectives Participants will be introduced to the basic techniques and stitches that are essential to the crochet process. These will be explored by making simple samplers and pieces that focus on the relationship between yarns, hooks, tension and pattern structures. We will seek to expand our knowledge and understanding of crochet as a medium through the different lenses of art and craft conventions as well as its potential for non-traditional application.

The College reserves the right to change the night or cancel classes if numbers are insufficient. Participants will be shown how to imagine, choose and construct a small final piece, (such as a scarf or bag, cushion cover or blanket), using the techniques and skills acquired during the course.

Course Content:
Class Layout Weeks 1-3:
An Introduction to Crochet The learning objectives of weeks 1-3 are to provide a brief history of the crochet tradition and explore its use as an art form, craft and in terms of its practical functions from Irish cottage industry to lace making and contemporary Haute Couture fashions. I will introduce the various materials and tools involved such as hooks, yarns and their relationship to tension, patterns and desired outcomes with a view to providing the student with a guide through the selection process. Participants will learn how to make chains, slip, single, double and treble crochet stitches.

These will provide students with the fundamental skills required to start their own mini projects during the second half of the course For more advanced students I propose to offer an introduction to sampling and testing methods that will allow the participant to develop their ideas into projects as well as provide assistance with any more complicated patterns and stitches that they are already working on.

Weeks 4-6:
Individual Mini-Project This section of the course will introduce different pattern formats, stitch abbreviations and how to read and understand basic crochet instructions. Students will be asked to chose a final piece they would like to make using the skills they have learned during Weeks 1-3.

Students will be shown techniques necessary for finishing a piece such as blocking, joining seams and weaving in ends so that they are neat and secure. In the final week the group will reveal their completed individual work and be asked to contribute to a class discussion aimed at celebrating their progress and achievements as well as any insights they might have gained with a view towards future projects.

The College reserves the right to change the night or cancel classes if numbers are insufficient.
