Grants
The Teagasc Authority approved the introduction of means testing of maintenance grants for students attending Further Level Courses at Teagasc and Private Agricultural Colleges in 2012.
Means testing will apply to Teagasc Level 5 and Level 6 full-time courses for the academic year 2022/2023.
Teagasc student maintenance grants are paid through Teagasc and the grant scheme is managed by Teagasc. The Teagasc grant scheme will be implemented along the lines of the National Student Grant Scheme 2021 but varies in respect of what 'add backs' are used to determine overall reckonable income.
Please note that applicants cannot apply to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) to be means tested for a Teagasc Student Maintenance Grant.

Level 6 Dairy New Entrant Course (Farm Expansion Planning)
This course is aimed at people planning to establish a new dairy farm enterprise. The course covers the core principles of successful dairying and provides the practical skills required to establishing a successful dairy enterprise. Topics covered include goal setting, financial planning, grassland management, farm infrastructure, labour requirements, milk quality and animal health. On successful completion of the course, participants will receive a QQI accredited Level 6 special purpose award in Farm Expansion Planning (6S2745).
Teagasc will commence Dairy Start-up courses for farmers interested in converting their farm to milk production in September each year. The course will involve visits to the Teagasc Moorepark research centre and farms that have recently converted to dairying, as well as the opportunity to engage with leading Teagasc dairy experts.
The first 4 days of the course will cover:
Animal breeding
Farmyard design
Grazing infrastructure
Cost of converting your farm to dairy milk production
Expected costs and returns from milk production
Reseeding
Animal health & biosecurity
Day 5 of the course will cover:
Milking machine design & wash routine
Milking routine
Milk quality
Day 6 of the course will cover Optional:
Robotic milking costs and design
Grazing infrastructure for robotics
Day 7 of the course will cover:
Lean dairy farming
Sustainable dairy production
Participants will develop a portfolio and worksheets during the course which will assist their decision making during the conversion phase.
The 10 academy meetings will focus on grassland and breeding management decisions over the course of one calendar year.

We aim to offer Dairy Start up courses on an annual basis at a number of regional venues. The exact location will depend on the demand for a Dairy Start-up course, with a suitable location being chosen for all persons interested in this course. We will do our utmost to centralise courses.
