Is this course for you?
This course is suitable for you if you are new to your role in management or supervisory management or if you wish to gain this valuable qualification and find a job in this sector.
To commence this course, ideally you will have achieved Junior / Leaving Certificate standard or appropriate FETAC/QQI Qualification or equivalent. Mature Applicants with relevant life and work experience are welcomed. Where deemed appropriate you may have to complete an English Language Proficiency Test.

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Business.
Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

Distinguish between desktop publishing and other forms of document production with reference to purpose, development process, and specialised DTP roles
Describe the characteristics of key components of DTP systems including those used for input, storage, protection, processing, output, and transmission of images and data
Outline the essential considerations for handling text and graphics in DTP documents including size, resolution, format, placement, orientation and colour, in the context of a range of page layouts
Describe the legal implications associated with use and protection of published material including licencing and copyright
Generate graphic content using a DTP application to create, import, capture and manipulate images and drawings
Set up a document for publication or printing specifying all required layout characteristics such as page, text, frame and table setup
Create a range of possible designs to meet a given brief with due consideration for production cost, presentation format and environment, and print materials
Fulfill the requirements of a client brief completing all stages in the publication process including requirements analysis and definition, solution design, planning, production, finishing, printing and publication
Analyse existing documents making appropriate recommendations for improvement.
The course 5N0785 Desktop Publishing is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;
Collection of Work 70%
Examination 30%.
Collection of Work 70%;
A collection of work is a collection and/or selection of pieces of work produced by you over the duration of the course that demonstrates your mastery of the skills. You will use guidelines provided by your tutor on the first session of your course. You will be required to compile a collection of your own work. The collection of work will demonstrate evidence of a range of the specific learning outcomes and or skills associated with this course.
Examination 30%;
An examination will assess your ability to recall and apply skills, knowledge and understanding within a set period of time (time constrained) and under examination conditions. This will be a written examination of 2 hours duration.
Grading
Pass 50% - 64%
Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%
