Learn how to safely operate, under supervision, a vertical milling machine.

Course overview
The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge, skills and competence to set up and safely operate, under supervision, a vertical milling machine.

What will I study ?
Explain the functions and features a milling machines

Interpret engineering component drawings.

Explain the use of and representation of datum edges and surfaces on component drawings.

Measure components and component features.

Calculate feed rates and speeds to cut a range of materials.

Demonstrate the correct methods of locating and securing work pieces to the machine table.

Explain the system of limits and fits to provide inter changeability of parts in accordance with BS and ISO standards

Machine mating components to drawing specifications requiring clearance

Explain the function and application of commonly used milling

Set up a dividing head and tail stock to machine: key ways, splines and indexed configurations

Set up a rotary table to include using a plug and dial indicator and a tapered shank bar and bush to cut circular spigots

Produce milled components incorporating; parallel, stepped, angular surfaces, radii, drilled and reamed holes and pocket milling

Demonstrate the correct procedures for set up and operation chucks, stub arbors and an adjustable boring head.

Apply safe work practice in the use of the milling machine and carry out routine maintenance tasks as specified by the manufacturer.
