Course Description:
This programme aims to equip the learner with the knowledge and skill to explore:
• The importance of healthy eating and its benefits to good health • The components of a healthy diet for all age groups
• The process of digestion and the factors that affect it
• The role of food and its significance in the management of a various conditions and diseases
• And learn the specific terminology and language to enable the learner to discuss and write about nutrition. Students should have access to computer or laptop with internet access.
Course Content:
The course will introduce you to the subject of nutrition and provide you with the knowledge to explore:
• The digestive system and how it works to absorb the daily nutrients required
• The contents of the Irish diet, the function of food and the various classes of nutrients
• Energy required by the body such as fats, carbohydrates and proteins along with vitamins, minerals and water
• The function, sources and deficiency of the macro and micro nutrients
• The importance of fibre and starch in the diet
• The nutritional needs of infants through to the older adult
• The groups of people who may be at risk of suffering deficiencies of the daily requirements
• How to preserve, prepare and cook food
• Food labelling and how to interpret food labels when you shop
• Food additives and their impact on our health
• The role of diet in a range of illnesses
• How to create a menu for infants to older adults, for active and sedentary people, for special diets
• The dietary recommendations of both the Department of Health and EU
