Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

5N1740 Community Inclusion.

An essential course for the Intellectual Disability Practice major award. The course examines the barriers that people with an intellectual disability face, including access to housing, work, healthcare and online resources. The course will provide you with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide a comprehensive introduction to the person centred approach to disability and empowerment. The course provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills to equip the learner with abilities required to use person centred planning to support a person to develop their personal profile, facilitate them and their circle of support to produce an action plan that will achieve their personal goals.

Throughout this course, you will discover how to;
Define what is meant by the concept of community

List the three types of assets found within a community

List a range of different types of relationships

Compile an inventory of associations and formal institutions within a community

Construct a network map of personal, organisational and community connections of an individual

Identify individuals who can act as network connectors within the community

Compile a Capacity Inventory of an individuals skills, interests, and capacity for participating in and contributing to their community

Facilitate persons with an intellectual disability to choose places within the community where their skills, interests and capacity for participation and contribution can be expressed

Assess opportunities for the development of relationships with individuals within those places

Plan a strategy for introducing an individual to the identified places and people

Devise a plan to provide ongoing support to the building and nurturance of relationships between a person with an intellectual disability and people in the persons community

Distinguish between physical integration in a community and community inclusion

Outline sources of information about the associations and formal institutions that exist within a community

Outline attitudes and practices within the community that may act as barriers to community inclusion for persons with an intellectual disability

Recognise environmental barriers to community inclusion for persons with an intellectual disability

Examine organisational policies, practices and staff attitudes that may act as barriers to community inclusion

Identify ways of overcoming barriers to inclusion found within the community

Outline changes that could be made to organisational practices that would promote community inclusion

Explain the role of staff as bridge-builders between a person with an intellectual disability and the community

Outline the characteristics and skills of people in the community who are potential bridge-builders between persons with a disability and their community.

The course 5N1740 Community Inclusion is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

Project 60%

Assignment 40%;
An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a brief with specific guidelines as to what should be included. An assignment is usually of short duration and may be carried out over a specified period of time.

Project 60%;
A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 5N1740 Community Inclusion QQI is the awarding body.
