HGV Professional Driver - Traineeship

Entry Requirements
Individuals must have be over 18 and hold a full Car Licence (B Category) and C class learner permit to be eligible for this course. In order to get a C Class learner permit individuals must pass their c class theory test and complete a medical with their doctor before applying for their learner permit. Employability Statement
On successful completion of this course you will be qualified to drive Rigid and Artic trucks as well as be able to source employment as a forklift operator in the workplace.
Graduates maybe eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of Higher Certificate and Degree programmes such as QQI level 6 in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Level 7 apprenticeship Supply Chain Associate or Road Transport Technology & Management.

There are no fees for this course. You may be entitled to a training allowance, travel or accommodation allowance, a meal allowance and access to the National Childcare Scheme (NCS).
If you are in receipt of a Social Welfare payment you may be able to continue with these payments or change to a Training Allowance please check with your DSP Officer.

If you are someone who enjoys lorries, driving, travelling, deadlines, working independently and your own company this could be the career for you.
The main qualification associated with the traineeship is a Driving Licence for Rigid (Category C) and Articulated (Category CE) trucks. Each individual will receive 24 hours of practical driving lessons, a 1hr pre-test lesson and the practical driving test for both the Rigid and Artic.
Individuals will also receive training for their CPC case study, ADR (which allows individuals to transport hazardous material such as liquid tar) and forklift licences in reach, Counterbalance and Pallet Truck. In additional practical work experience is built into the course
What is a Traineeship?
Traineeships combine directed off-the-job training (classroom-based learning) with on-the-job training (work-based learning). A min of 30 % of the course is on-the-job. This approach provides the opportunity to develop practical skills and gain real work experience, reinforcing the theory learnt in the classroom.
The course is delivered in Cavan Institute Monday – Friday from 9-4pm. After you have received the required training from September to November this will change to 3 days a week classroom-based learning in Cavan Institute and two days on site work-based training with your employer.
Employers and CMETB design all aspects of the traineeship, from programme design and development to recruitment and delivery, therefore tailoring the programme to meet the skill needs and gaps within the industry.
