The NUI Certificate Community Work in a Changing Ireland programme is designed to enable participants to develop an appreciation of the principles and processes that underpin social inclusion and equality focused community work and contribute to sustainable community work initiatives in their own communities.

The programme is designed to be delivered over 100 hours of contact time.

The programme is offered in partnership with a range of organisations to a cohort of participants rather than individual applicants.
The NUI Certificate ‘Community Work in a Changing Ireland’ aims to provide those with an interest in developing and/or contributing to community-based initiatives with a comprehensive overview of the key aspects of community work and associated activities. In particular principles, processes and policy contexts will be examined, at a time of significant developments in policy and provision.
The certificate programme is designed around the following themes:
- exploration of key issues impacting on communities and different groups within those communities e.g young people, migrants, Travellers and other minority groups
- understing the principles of community work and its relationship with other interventions in the community
- examination the key concepts and themes in community work e.g. social justice, equality focus
- developing knowledge of the distinct and complementary roles of those involved in community work e.g. activists, professional workers and external agencies
- developing a critical awareness and understanding of the historical and contemporary context of community work
- developing skills in planning for and initiating community work initiatives
Lectures will be used where appropriate, though the emphasis of the programme will be on experiential learning through workshops, seminars and practical assignments, with structured reflection/discussion to promote integrated learning.
