Entry Requirements

A Level 8 Honours Degree is desirable. In certain circumstances, applicants may be eligible for entry via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

All part-time programmes at MTU will run subject to sufficient student numbers. Where a programme cannot proceed, applicants will be contacted and advised on alternative study options.

Students should note that fees quoted relate to the academic year 2024-2025 only and are subject to change on an annual basis. Except where stated, course fees cover the cost of tuition only.

Graduates of the SPA Certificate in Applied Analytics for Business will be confident, active members and leaders of data driven organisations. Through their understanding of data, they will be advocates for data-based decision making within their organisations. It is anticipated that some graduates will also progress to other educational programmes.

Access, Transfer & Progression
Candidates will be required to hold a Level 8 honours degree or equivalent. Candidates may also be considered based on significant work experience via recognition of prior learning (RPL). Those for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS of 6.5 or above.

Graduates will be eligible to progress to other academic programmes at MTU and other HEIs, for example, the Master of Business Administration in Strategy (part-time delivery) within MTU will offer students an exemption upon completion of this SPA Certificate in Applied Analytics for Business, against a similar module on the MBA (Strategy).

Standard entry requirements must still be met; further information can be provided by the course coordinator on request.

The SPA Certificate in Applied Analytics for Business aims to develop the data literacy of participants. The programme is suitable for a wide range of learners including:

Team members and operational staff who constantly interact with data and need professional data literacy skills to enable them to handle, interpret, and communicate data to support innovation, strategy development and data-driven decision making.

Business leaders who need upskilling in data governance, ethics and technologies so that they can interact with data specialists most effectively.

New graduates who require strong professional skills in data analysis, management, communication and visualisation, as well as an understanding of the business context, strategic use of data, and work readiness skills for a commercial environment.

Returners to work who want to reskill for careers in data analytics.

Students with a level 8 qualification might choose this programme to complement their undergraduate degree. Individual students may enrol in this programme, and it is also envisaged that a company could choose to run this programme for their internal staff.

Programme Structure
One ten credit module addresses all the programme learning outcomes of the Level 9 Special Purpose Award – Certificate in Applied Analytics for Business.

Course delivery, as well as course assessment, is linked to the stages of the CRISP-DM Data Mining Process. This Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) has six sequential phases:

Business understanding – What does the business need

Data understanding – What data do we have / need? Is it clean?

Data preparation – How do we organize the data for modeling?

Modeling – What modeling techniques should we apply?

Evaluation – Which model best meets the business objectives?

Deployment – How do stakeholders access the results?

On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

Investigate how best practice data analytics is used within business.

Evaluate the role of Data Analysis techniques in Business Understanding.

Discuss the application of Data Analysis techniques in Data Understanding.

Evaluate and Apply a variety of Data Preparation techniques.

Justify and apply appropriate Modelling techniques to business datasets.

Evaluate the performance of various models and advise management on best deployment options.
