Course Description:
The course will run for 8 weeks and the tutor will let the class know what materials they need to acquire. Initially Angela the tutor will have an info chat with the class and observe everyone’s level of sewing ability and will then demonstrate basic craft/dressmaking skills over 2/3 classes. Demonstrations will also include how to understand the basic garment pattern, cutting out, figuring how much fabric to buy etc. eventually progressing to assembling a garment/craft. As this is an interactive sewing course, the tutor is very open to all suggestions/requests, and remember your creativity is boundless!

Hi, my name is Angela and I am really excited to start this introduction to sewing/dressmaking course. I have over 35 years’ experience in sewing, tailoring, craft making, dressmaking, and alterations. I earned my stripes working for ‘Laura Ashley’ and ‘Michael H’, where I qualified as a sample maker. Unfortunately, I have watched the sewing industry disappear over time, along with the acceptance of a throwaway society. This in turn has made me think it would be great to try and re-energize the art of sewing. I noticed over the last while, many people are buying domestic sewing machines, but don’t know how to get the most out of them. I would love the opportunity to teach the students sewing techniques that can be applied to numerous creative projects. I am also eager to show students how creating something from scratch, can be extremely satisfying and therapeutic, especially in these trying times.

Week 1. Will have a group info chat and find what are the students ambitions, I will observe everyone's sewing levels. I will give a list of material/pattern requirements.

Week 2 and 3. I will give demonstrations of various sewing techniques, eg. joining seams, inserting zips, turning hems, overlocking etc.

Week 4 and 5. I will Explain how to understand and use garment patterns. How to cut out patterns, prepare for sewing.

Week 6, and 8. We will continue with garment/craft assembly until completion.
