Entry Requirements
QQI Level 4 Major Award, or recognized equivalent e.g. Leaving Certificate, or two years’ full-time experience working within a salon.
CEFRL B2+ level of English (where English is not a first language)
It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.
Careers / Further progression
Having successfully completed the certificate in Hairdressing course, students can pursue an apprenticeship in Hairdressing.
Higher Education Progression
Qualified Hair Stylists have diverse career opportunities available to them. Many work in a salon as a senior stylist, Senior Colour Technician, Style Director, Salon Manager or Salon Owner.
The Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing is also a gateway to third-level education through which candidates may wish to acquire a management or business degree, as well as other specialist areas

There are no costs incurred by the Apprentices.
How to Apply:
Applications for participation in the Apprenticeship program must be made by the salon directly to National Hairdressing Apprenticeship (NHA) at www.hairdressingapprenticeship.ie
The Apprentice cannot apply through Portlaoise Institute, all applications come from salons through the NHA.
The National Hairdressing Apprenticeship will provide successful apprentices with a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) Level 6-Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing?which will be the only recognised national qualification for fully qualified hairdressers in Ireland.
The National Hairdressing Apprenticeship programme is designed to ensure that the apprentice receives training both on and off the job over a minimum of three years.
With a blend of on-the-job training (80%) in full time employment, and one day a week off-the-job training (20%) at Portlaoise Institute, we provide apprentice with all the necessary skills, techniques, theory, and confidence in assisting them to become a fully qualified Hairdresser.

Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing, QQI Level 6 Major Award on the National Framework of Qualifications. This Certificate is not only recognised nationally but also has international currency.
