Applied Science with Laboratory Techniques
This full-time one year programme (5M3807 Laboratory Techniques) provides a solid foundation in General Science. The programme aims to provide both the knowledge and practical skills necessary to prepare learners for further studies in areas such as Biomedical, Pharmaceutical, Environmental, Agriculture, Food, Nutrition, Biological, Forensic and Sports Science as well as Pharmacy Technician programmes.

Entry Requirements
Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners)

Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Employment Options:
The successful completion of the QQI Major Level 5 in Laboratory Techniques will enable applicants to source employment at an entry level in a science laboratory and work independently and/ or under supervision and apply a range of scientific theory and practice and use appropriate equipment to carry out specific laboratory experiments accurately including analysis of results.

Students can apply to a variety of third level programmes in the Science field, including TUS (Technological University of the Shannon), IT Carlow, MU, UCD, GMIT, DCU, NUIG, MTU and Trinity College Dublin, under the Higher Education Links Scheme or as a mature student.

Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for positions where a basic knowledge and understanding of science is required. Previous students have taken up positions within the Pharmaceutical, Medical Devices Industries and the Chemical sector.
