The Certificate in Emergency Nursing endeavours to educate and guide emergency nursing practice, a speciality that is underpinned by expert knowledge, specialist education and clinical experience. It is envisaged that the knowledge and skills gained in this programme will prepare the ED nurse for progression onto the Post Grad Diploma in Specialist Nursing (Emergency).

Course Delivery
The programme will be delivered using a blended learning approach. Students will attend MTU Kerry Campus for 2 days over the 26 weeks, with online work undertaken between college days. The focus of the day in college will be skills development and acquisition.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to be:
Registered General Nurses.
Currently employed in Emergency Department or Local Injury Unit for the course duration.

What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to.

On successful completion of the programme you will have gained 20 credits at NFQ level 8 that can contribute to the progression to a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing (Emergency).

€950 plus a €95 capitation fee.

Registered nurses and midwives directly employed either on a permanent or on a temporary basis (for three consecutive months) by the HSE are eligible to apply for funding support. Given the acuity of patients who present to Emergency Departments it is recognised that there is a need to develop additional clinical expertise among emergency nurses. A consortium of five Institutes of Technology/Technological Universities have developed and deliver this Level 8 Special Purpose Award in Emergency Nursing for nurses working in Emergency Departments or Local Injury Units.

This programme supports the commitment made by ONMSD HSE in association with the National Emergency Medicine Programme, to provide clinical education for nurses working in Emergency Department.
