Entry Requirements

Honours degree normally with a minimum of Grade 2.1. Students with a primary degree other than Music would normally have to demonstrate some degree of musical training and affinity. Interview required. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

Minimum English language requirements:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. For information about English language tests accepted and required scores, please see here. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and International applicants.

The programme is concerned with a range of areas relating to music technology, including composition, sound recording and engineering, computer music programming, and acoustics.

The MA offers full use of computer resources at the Music Technology Labs at Maynooth University; access to studio space, with the possibility of working towards recording and production projects; opportunities to have compositions performed; individual tutorial time with a designated advisor; expert advice on musical and technical issues from composers and researchers at the cutting edge of their fields.

The course is structured around a number of options covering all aspects of Computer Music, from acoustics to computer programming, including audio signal processing, synthesis and recording engineering. In addition, students will complete a research project, which can take the form a composition portfolio or a thesis in a computer music-related topic. Foreign language instruction is also available through the Maynooth University Language Centre.
