This training will equip the learner with the knowledge and skills for employment opportunities in the industry. This course aims to improve knowledge and skills relating to riding, breaking, training horses and encourage students towards Horse Sport Ireland and British Horse Society riding and coaching qualifications.

The Level 5 Certificate in Horsemanship (Equitation) is one year, and the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horsemanship (Equitation) is one year

Entry Requirements

There is a separate application process for each programme. Applicants to the Level 5 in Kildalton must be 18 years old or over on 1st January following entry. Applicants to Gurteen College must be 17 years or over on 1st January following entry. Ideally applicant should have completed the senior cycle of second level education. Applicants must undergo an interview and practical riding assessment as part of the application process. Students with an equivalent qualification may apply for entry to Level 6 programme. This process to apply for Level 6 also includes an interview and riding assessment.

• Students with this Level 5 award may apply to a Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horsemanship (Equitation).
• Progression may be possible through the Higher Education Links scheme. Please contact the relevant higher education institute for further information.

Graduates of the Advanced Cert can progress into employment in the industry.

Student Maintenance Grants
The Teagasc Authority approved the introduction of means testing of maintenance grants for students attending Further Level Courses at Teagasc and Private Agricultural Colleges in 2012.

Means testing will apply to Teagasc Level 5 and Level 6 full-time courses for the academic year 2023/2024.

Teagasc student maintenance grants are paid through Teagasc and the grant scheme is managed by Teagasc. The Teagasc grant scheme will be implemented along the lines of the National Student Grant Scheme 2023 but varies in respect of what 'add backs' are used to determine overall reckonable income.

Please note that applicants cannot apply to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) to be means tested for a Teagasc Student Maintenance Grant.

Teagasc Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horsemanship (Equitation)

The sport horse industry contributes more than €816 million directly/indirectly to the Irish economy each year, employing close to 14,000 directly and indirectly. Sport horse career opportunities include yard manager, competition rider, groom, breaking and training, coach, sales prep, and self – employed ventures such as equine tourism. In addition there are a number of career opportunities in supporting or service provider roles.

This training will equip the learner with the knowledge and skills for employment opportunities in the industry. This course aims to improve knowledge and skills relating to riding, breaking, training horses and encourage students towards Horse Sport Ireland and British Horse Society riding and coaching qualifications. Students who successfully complete Level 6 are qualified to teach in AIRE (Association of Irish Riding Establishments) approved centres
