The EFL Ireland High School Year course gives EFL (English Foreign Language) students the opportunity to study in an Irish Secondary (High School). An academic year in Ireland provides students with an invaluable opportunity for personal development, increasing cultural knowledge and awareness, and gaining confidence in using another language.

Duration

Academic Year: End of August to mid –June
Term: End of Aug - Christmas; Jan - April.

Each school sets exact dates for terms and examinations and students must complete the full year to participate.

Eligibility

Age requirements: Junior Cycle (12/13 years – 15/16 years)
Senior Cycle (16 years – 17 years)

Academic Year and Term Courses
Ireland has a worldwide reputation for quality education and can proudly boast a choice of many excellent schools. The EFL Ireland High School Year course gives EFL (English Foreign Language) students the opportunity to study in an Irish Secondary (High School). An academic year in Ireland provides students with an invaluable opportunity for personal development, increasing cultural knowledge and awareness, and gaining confidence in using another language. And through living and studying in Ireland the student will be given the opportunity to become fluent.

Junior Cycle
Irish students enter High School at 12/13 years and the Junior Cycle takes 3 years.

Senior Cycle
The Senior Cycle prepares students for the Leaving Certificate Examination. The course can be taken over 2/3 years – the number of years depends on the school attended. Irish Schools usually group subjects to allow students a wider choice of career after school. The Leaving Certificate is a recognised entry qualification for both Irish and UK Universities and universities throughout the English- speaking world and beyond.

Junior Cycle
Students take approximately 9 subjects. Mathematics and English are compulsory and all schools provide Religious and Physical Education. At the end of the Junior Cycle students take the Junior Certificate Examination.

Senior Cycle
Students study approximately 7 subjects, which may be taken at either Higher or Lower Levels.
