This course provides the skills and knowledge required for a new role identified by the HSE to support GPs to expand their practices. It is a “hybrid” role with both assistant to the Practice Nurse and medical office administration functions. GP Assistants may carry out certain basic tasks such as taking temperatures, pulse, weight and promoting positive mental/physical/nutritional health with patients etc. Sterilising equipment, restocking consultation rooms, covering administrative duties, communicating with patients, relatives and carers all form part of the role.

Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent.

Pre-entry guidance meeting

Mature applicants welcome.

At registration students will be requested to complete the necessary documentation in order to complete a successful garda vetting process. Garda clearance is a mandatory requirement for work placement.

PROGRESSION TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Students who successfully complete the course may gain entry to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the Higher Education Links Scheme. This course is linked to the majority of Nursing Colleges in Ireland. The number of places available are restricted. Check with the Admissions office of individual institutions for further details.

This course is considered for entry to Nursing Colleges in the U.K. Several of these colleges visit GTI each year to give talks on progression to UK degree courses in Nursing and Midwifery.

Offers of places will issue following completion of first round pre-guidance meetings
