Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4. (Note: Students who wish to progress to policing require passes in LC Maths and English).

For mature applicants experience will be considered instead of formal qualifications.

CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.

All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

This course meets the needs of the security industry requirements in line with the terms of the Private Security Services Act 2004. Career opportunities exist in every area of the healthcare system in hospital and care environments. The qualifications gained allow also for work in the private security industry. Graduates can also apply for a career in An Garda Síochana, the Defence Forces, Prison Services or the Fire Services.

The skills and knowledge gained in this course are relevant to a broad variety of services where security is a factor. We offer training and licencing to work in the security sector, which is mandatory under the Private security authority (PSA), this is both for guarding service and door security. This provide students with the relevant certificate to work in the security sector.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE
Students undertake a block work placement of 2 weeks in a healthcare/care environment. Work placement is a highly valued component of the student experience here at the college. An excellent opportunity for you to gain insight into the world of work. Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS

Safe Pass Certification (optional) – Safe Pass is a one-day health and safety awareness programme, the aim of the programme is to raise the standard of safety awareness. This ensures that, all site personnel undergo basic health and safety awareness training to enable them to work safely and without being a risk to themselves or others.

First Aid Workshop (online) – This First Aid Workshop will introduce the learner to the principles of First Aid. The workshop includes identifying the role of the First Aider. Learners will understand how to respond to various injuries and illnesses including choking, fainting, burns, heart attacks, strokes, panic attacks, sprains and strains. The purpose of this workshop is to give the learner a basic understanding of how to deal with First Aid Emergencies. It is not intended as a substitute for a full First Aid Response Course.  A Certificate of from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on completion.

People Moving and Handling Training and Certification – This workshop teaches safe and effective techniques used in the safe moving and handling of people in a variety of settings. This training is mandatory for person’s involved in manual handling and people moving and handling tasks. It is required by legislation under The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation 2007 Part two chapter four. The training involves the theory module which is completed online (HSELanD.ie) and the practical module which is classroom based. The certificate obtained is valid for three years.

Manual Handling Training and Certification – This training (MH) is mandatory for person’s involved in manual handling tasks. It is required by legislation under The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation 2007 Part two chapter four. The training involves the theory module which is completed online (HSELanD.ie) and the practical module which is classroom based. The certificate obtained is valid for three years. Manual Handling training course delivers the proper techniques for lifting, carrying, loading, pushing and pulling various tasks or loads to reduce the risk of injury to the worker. The need to avoid manual handling by using mechanical aids where possible will also be demonstrated. It provides the skills to identify risks with various handling tasks.

Introduction to GDPR (online) – This course gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A Certificate of Completion is issued on completion.

HSE Safeguarding Adults at Risk of Abuse Certificate (requirement for work experience) – Its primary focus is to inform learners on the guiding practice and procedures to keep vulnerable adults safe in the community and residential settings. The content includes leaners being informed of their safeguarding responsibilities, the different types of abuse and neglect and how to recognise them and how to report concerns in line with HSE guidelines. All learners receive a certificate on completion at the end of the course.

Dementia Enhanced Home Supports E-learning Programme (HSELand)

Microsoft Outlook – This Microsoft Outlook workshop will give information on accessing your college email, Outlook layout, how to send and receive emails, attaching/downloading a file and reply options.  It also covers organising your emails – folders etc, Outlook settings, signature, out-of-office reply, using the calendar, setting up meetings, setting up reminders and to do lists. A Certificate from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on completion. 

CPI Safety Intervention (formerly known as MAPA) – Incorporates trauma-informed and person-centred approaches. The programme is the perfect solution for professionals working in health, social care and education who need to prevent and/or intervene in crisis situations. With a focus on prevention, it also teaches staff de-escalation skills as well as non-restrictive and restrictive interventions.
