Leaving Certificate: O6/H7 in 5 subjects.
Equivalent qualifications will be accepted.

Mature Applicants
Mature applicants who have relevant experience and may not meet the above entry requirements are welcome to apply.

Interview and Portfolio
All applicants will be interviewed and must present a portfolio at interview.

The portfolio should demonstrate an ability to draw. Observational drawing (not from pictures or imagination) is essential. Portfolio should also display use of colour.

3D work, sketchbooks and ideas books can also be included.

Graduates have gained employment on such high profile productions in Ireland such as “Into The Badlands”, “Vikings”, “Ripper Street”, and “Penny Dreadful”; and internationally “Alien: Covenant”, “Lord of the Rings” and “Gossip Girl”. Job titles include; Costume Designer, Costume Assistant, Costume Technician, Wardrobe Person, Make-up Artist, Make-up Technician, Hair/Wig Designer, Hair/ Wig Technician.

About the Course
This intensive course provides you with the creative ability to visually communicate your design ideas and the technical skills to produce complete costumes, hair and make-up for performers.

Areas of general study include research, design development, drawing and illustration, pattern drafting and costume construction for the realisation of 2D designs into 3D. You will also learn practical skills for hair/wig and make-up design and application.

• Costume design, illustration and drawing
• Period and contemporary pattern drafting
• Period and contemporary costume construction
• Period corset construction
• Millinery
• Metal work
• Media and materials exploration
• Mask making
• Make-up design and application including prosthetics
• Wig/hair design and maintenance
• Work experience is in collaboration with the Performance department and the Technical Theatre department on designing shows for public performance.

Academic Subjects:
• Costume history and theory
• Theatre history and theatre studies

Course content may be revised for educational or organisational reasons.
