Leaving Certificate General Entry Requirements
SETU is delighted to confirm that the ‘second chance’ maths entry exam will continue again in 2023.
The purpose of this exam is to provide applicants with a second chance opportunity to achieve the
minimum maths entry requirements. The examination will follow the standard format based on the existing leaving certificate ordinary level paper.
Attaining a qualifying standard in the SETU maths exam does not in itself guarantee a place on any course at SETU. The cut off points and normal eligibility criteria will still apply. CAO offers are subject to available places post Round 1. Date of the maths exam for 2023 to be confirmed.
Leaving Certificate Vocational Progamme LCVP
Waterford Institute of Technology treats the link modules as a single subject and awards points as follows:
Distinction - 66, Merit - 46, Pass - 28
This is automatically computed by the CAO and will count if it is one of your six best subjects. It will not, however, substitute for an honour where one or more are required.
Leaving Certificate Applied Programme LCAP
The Leaving Certificate Applied Programme was designed primarily to prepare students for the transition from school to working life. It is not intended for direct tansfer into third level. However, students with the LCAP who have completed a QQI FET/FETAC award can be considered for entry.
QQI FET Applicants General Information
Students who have completed a full QQI-FET award at Level 5, and achieved at least three distinctions, are eligible to apply through CAO for entry to Year 1 on to Level 6, 7 and 8 courses. Students who have completed a full QQI-FET award at Level 6 may be eligible to enter Year 2.
The maximum possible points awarded through QQI-FET is 390. The scoring system only applies where all of the requirements for the major award are met i.e. where the named component awards specified have been achieved to a minimum of 120 credits.
Progression Scheme
The Progression Scheme is an additional opportunity for students who successfully complete a QQI FET Award in a partner Colleges of Further Education and Training College/Centre to gain entry to SETU programmes. Mature Student Applications
A mature student is someone who is at least 23 years of age on 1 January of the year of entry to an undergraduate course and who may not meet the normal admission requirements. Applications are made through the CAO before the 1 February or before late application deadline of 1 May 2024. Applicants are assessed based on the information they enter on their CAO application. Note: You must apply for nursing and music courses by 1 February 2024.
Selection Process – Nursing Applications
Mature applicants for nursing courses will receive correspondence under separate cover from the Nursing Careers Centre (Public Appointments Service - PAS). For full details on

Mature Applicant – Change of Mind
The Change of Mind facility becomes available after 1 May and the closing date is 1 July.
The Change of Mind facility affords mature applicants an opportunity to change the order of preference only of their course choices. If applicants introduce a new programme to their list of choices by way of Change of Mind, they will compete for a place on that programme based on their Leaving Certificate or equivalent results only. They will not compete as a mature applicant.

Non-standard application
A non-standard application is one that does not meet the definition of a standard application.

Applicants wishing to make a non-standard application must select the relevant category when applying to the CAO.

Early online application (discounted): Fee €30 Closing Date: 20 January 2024 at 5pm
Normal online application: Fee €45 Closing Date: 1 February 2024 at 5pm
Late online application - restrictions apply (see page 3 2024 CAO Handbook): Fee: €60 Closing Date: 1 May 2024 at 5pm

Be sure to complete any action well in advance of closing dates. You should avoid making an application close to a closing date. No extensions to closing dates will be allowed and all application fees are non-refundable.
LATE APPLICATIONS
Late Applications are those which are received after 5pm on 1 February 2024. The closing date for late applications is 5pm on 1 May 2024, subject to the restrictions listed on page 3 of the 2024 CAO Handbook. The online facility for late applications opens on the 5 March 2024 at 12:00 noon - a fee of €60 applies.
Exceptional Late Applications (Exception to the timetable)
The exceptional closing date of 22 July at 5pm applies only to applicants who are registered as an undergraduate student on 1 May 2024 in any year in any one of the participating HEIs (subject to the exclusions listed below). In order to avail of the Exceptional Late Application facility you must have entered the HEI through the CAO system. This is an exceptional late closing date and all steps must be completed by 5pm on 22 July. No changes may be made after this date.
If you did not enter your current course through the CAO system, you must first contact the Admissions Office of the HEI to which you wish to apply and they will inform you if you may submit an application direct to the institution.
Exclusions:
You may submit a late application only for entry to courses other than your existing course. If you wish to repeat the year in the same course you must arrange this within your HEI.
Mary Immaculate College Limerick, Marino Institute of Education, Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick and Maynooth University have special procedures in place in the case of current or previous students who wish to apply for entry to another course in the same HEI. Such applicants must contact their Admissions Office to determine the application procedure. However, if you are a student in another HEI and you wish to apply to any of these five HEIs, you should apply through CAO.

About the course
Our Joint Honours Arts Degree offers students a wide range of subject combinations allowing students the opportunity to delve deeper into an area they have already experienced and enjoyed, or to explore new areas and find new passions.
Arts degrees develop a student’s ability to explore complex issues and challenge difficult questions, mindful of the wide diversity of perspectives and the need to act with integrity. Arts graduates are known for their communication, creativity and problem-solving skills; we focus on developing the ability to approach modern issues with the critical and analytical skills necessary to ensure students are grounded in their areas of study, while also future focused.
Year 1 Modules
First year is a time for students to work out what each of the subject areas is about. Students choose 3 subjects in first year from our subject offering and gain an understanding of each of these both during the degree and in terms of career pathways.
In first year, students take introductory modules in 3 subjects from:

- Theatre Studies
- Religious Studies
- Psychology
- Law
At the end of first year, students choose 2 of these for the remainder of their degree.
Note: Study Abroad is available on this degree, extending your degree by one year. Students who opt in graduate with a BA (Hons) International.
