This Community Addiction course is designed to help you ultimately help yourself and help your community. Many former graduates now work in the voluntary, health or social care sectors and in drug treatment and prevention agencies for youths and adults.
Students are diverse and include care workers, community workers, social workers, charity volunteers, agency workers, or indeed anyone, who wishes to work in this challenging area.

Learning about Addiction and working in Addiction is both personally and professionally enriching and life changing for many. When we confront what is addiction for us personally we begin to see clearly what it is. Learning about the various types of addiction and their effects, makes us draw on our own experiences. We learn to identify patterns of addiction.
This Addiction course allows you to learn about the process of addiction and the consequences of how it affects families, communities and Irish society. Confronting Addiction allows us to see how prevalent it is in our community.
The main theories of addiction and the models of treatment of addiction are explored. Knowing what causes addiction as well as how theories inform treatment practice and social policies will greatly help your understanding.
Ideally suited to anyone interested in working with persons with addiction in the community.
On completion you will be able to:
• gain a knowledge of addiction, different drugs and their effects and the process of addiction
• become more effective in your personal and community responses to addiction
• understand the main divisions of psychoactive substances, their common effects and the distinctions between drug use, misuse, and drug dependence
• Know the effects of both legal and non-legal drugs on the brain and central nervous system
• Develop an understanding of process addictions and treatment interventions and strategies.
