The purpose of the Nursing Studies - Maternity Care course is to provide students with a clear understanding of the academic requirements, personal qualities and charac­teristics necessary for a successful career in midwifery. The focus of the Nursing Studies - Maternity Care course is to prepare students for progression to Midwifery or Nursing Degree Programmes.

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Progression
At Cavan Institute:
Graduates are eligible to progress to the Level 6 Social Care with Counselling Skills course. Elsewhere: A full QQI award in Nursing Studies is now recognised as an entry route into nurse training in Higher Education Institutions in Ireland and in the UK. Gradu­ates of this course in Nursing Studies- Maternity Care have been successful in gaining entry to nurse and midwifery training in Ireland and in the UK. In addition to the opportunities for training in Irish Universities, Cavan Institute has developed partnerships with UK-based universities and supports students with the UCAS application process.

Career Opportunities
Students will be eligible to apply for employment in a variety of health care settings including nursing homes, home/domiciliary care, hospitals, residential care settings and day care centres. Students may also progress to further and or higher educa­tion training in a variety of specialities, including but not restricted to nursing, social care, childcare and education. A large percentage of our students progress to degrees in Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland and also the UK Universities through the UCAS application system.

1. PLC Maintenance Grant
Means-tested maintenance grants are available to eligible students attending approved full-time courses of further education in approved Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) centres, of which Cavan Institute is one.
Applications can be made online to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie

2. Back to Education Allowance (BTEA)
The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) allows people in receipt of certain social welfare payments to retain those payments whilst participating in approved full-time courses in further education.

3. Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS)
This scheme allows unemployed people aged over 21 to engage in education and training without losing their benefits. It applies to all courses offered at Cavan Institute and applicants must be in receipt of one of a number of social welfare supports for at least six months.

4. HEA Fund for Students with Disabilities
The Higher Education Authority’s “Fund for Students with Disabilities” allocates funding to further and higher education colleges for the provision of services and supports to full-time students with disabilities. Applications to the fund are made on behalf of an eligible student by Cavan Institute following an assessment.

June 1st is the closing date for receipt of applications for first round offers. However, applications will be accepted and processed on courses where places are available following this date and second round offers will be made to eligible applicants who apply after that date.

Students will gain the skills to work under supervision in a variety of healthcare settings. The course combines a wide range of modules designed to give students an overview of topics required for midwifery and nursing, with a work placement element, which students arrange in a healthcare setting of their choice. Students are provided with a unique insight into careers in midwifery, nursing and caring professions. The course in Nursing Studies - Maternity Care also prepares students for academic studies, interviews and career progression.
