Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

Discusses the issues and specific care requirements related to an older person with cognitive and sensory impairment, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke, or mental illness

Throughout this programme, you will discover how to:
Discuss a range of age related issues to include healthy ageing, global and national demographic trends, the normal physiological and psychological processes of ageing, the social impact of ageing on older people and differing attitudes to ageing and older people

Analyse the roles of the health care assistant in promoting positive attitudes to ageing and of statutory and voluntary agencies in promoting the well being of older people

Examine a range of concepts and practices to include preparation for retirement and the ethnic and cultural influences on the older person

Explore a range of older people's needs to include physical, social, emotional, psychological, recreational, financial, environmental and spiritual needs

Summarise the role of the health care assistant in providing care for older people

Discuss the issues related to an older person with mental illness or dementia and of living with chronic illness

Recognise the individual needs of the dying older person and their families

Summarise the range of the care settings for older people and the members of the healthcare team available in each care setting

Explore a range of specific services that are available for older people to include education, lifelong learning, retirement/the workplace and leisure

Analyse current approaches towards developing quality in the provision of services for older people and their families to include standards and quality assurance

Employ effective communication with the older person, their family and the multi disciplinary team

Adapt care and practices to meet the needs of older people with cognitive and sensory impairment and physical disabilities

Exercise duties in a way that is respectful to the person's body after death

Promote a range of aspects of care for the older person to include empowerment, advocacy, independence, individualised care, dignity, respect, choice, self esteem and include family and carers as partners in care

Give assistance in the identification of how health promotion issues can be promoted in care settings for older people and in the provision of therapeutic interventions that will enhance the social interactions and quality of life of the older person.

The course 5N2706 Care of the Older Person is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

Project 40%.

Skills Demonstration: 60%
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Project: 40%
A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 5N2706 Care of the Older Person. QQI is the awarding body. QQI stands for Quality and Qualifications Ireland.
