This one year full-time programme (5M2061 Engineering Technology) will introduce students to the world of Engineering. It aims to provide students with a wide range of experience within the Engineering sectors, while preparing students for entry into third level education, apprenticeships or direct entry into the workplace. Students will attend our purpose built engineering training workshop for one full day weekly. Here the students will use and learn how to operate different engineering machines including a CNC Lathe, a Laser Cutter and all welding types, including a VR welding simulator. This programme will allow you to become familiar with the terminology, materials, equipment and working practices within the Engineering industry.

Entry Requirements

Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners)

Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.

Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Employment options:
The successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award in Engineering Technology will enable applicants under supervision to safely utilise a range of techniques and processes to solve engineering related challenges under supervision in a workplace environment.

Links to 3rd Level:
Learners who successfully complete the QQI Level 5 Engineering Technology programme can apply to TUS (Technological University of the Shannon) for entry in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Engineering Degrees in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. Students can also apply to other 3rd Level Institutions under the Higher Education Links Scheme or as a mature student.

Career options:
Careers in Engineering include metal fabrication, welding and other related engineering sectors. As an alternative to directly entering the workforce, students may also be eligible to apply for apprenticeships.

The course content will be delivered in a practical and hands on environment where students will gain experience in Engineering Processes, Engineering Drawing and Computer Aided Design (2D and 3D CAD).
