Duration
10 weeks x 3 hours per evening (7pm – 10pm) and 2 Saturdays (9:30am – 4pm)
Entry Requirements
It is recommended that participants will have completed Child Development at QQI Level 5 and/or have relevant work or life experience in working with children with special needs.
Garda Vetting
All learners must undergo Garda Vetting if not already done so.

Specific Learning Outcomes
Learners will …
1. Explore in the role and responsibilities of the Special Needs Assistant
2. Examine the qualities and skills of an effective Special Needs Assistant
3. Examine relevant legislation in relation to disability
4. Explore the rights of children with disabilities in relation to personal autonomy, participation and decision making
5. Relate effectively and appropriately to children who present with additional needs
6. Use care routines in feeding, toileting and general hygiene
7. Maintain appropriate relationships with children parents, primary carers, teachers and other members of the multidisciplinary team
8. Work effectively with children who present with disabilities under the direction of the classroom teacher
9. Assist children with disabilities in a range of activities, ensuring equality of opportunity through working in a safe and professional manner
10. Reflect on personal practice working with children, their parents or guardians and colleagues ensuring that children’s individuality is promoted and that their needs are met.
Work Experience
Learners must complete a total of 20 hours of supervised work experience over the duration of the module. During the work experience the learner must work with a child or children with Special Educational Needs.
Your work experience supervisor must be qualified to supervise your tasks. Your supervisor must have a qualification of Level 6 or higher on the national framework of qualifications and be willing to verify this.
Work experience supervisors must sign all work experience documentation.
Skills Demonstration 60%
Learner Record 40%
Skills Demonstration 1 = 15%
Learners will prepare for and take part in a team activity
Skills Demonstration 2 = 15%
Learners will be given a specific task to complete while on work experience and record and reflect on their experience and participation.
Skills Demonstration 3 = 30%
Learners will, in groups, conduct a research project on a specific special need in class and present findings, as a group, to the class.
Learner Record = 40%
Learners will document, in ten entries, ten tasks completed while on work experience.
Credit Value
15 Level 5 Credits – These credits can be used as mandatory or optional credits towards a variety of Awards. Please speak to the adult Education Coordinator for guidance.
Protection for Enrolled Learners
In the event of Killucan Community Services Centre ceasing to trade, arrangements have been made with similar alternate providers to allow learners to complete programmes on which they are enrolled.
